Why Cranial Therapy?
Cranial therapy is one of the fastest growing areas of physical therapy or manual medicine there is today. Working with the structural strains of the body (bones and ligaments) along with emotional strains attributed to any form of trauma (the Craniosacral system – brain/body connection) Lorraine can help alleviate ongoing chronic pain or conditions. Examples in adults, being migraines or tinnitus for example.
Cranial Therapy is a subtle form of osteopathic treatment that uses very gentle pressure to encourage the release of stresses throughout the body. It is called ‘cranial’ because treatment often involves the head, although other parts of the body such as the spine and tailbone can also be involved.
Our Physical Therapist and Lorraine Blackshields is Osteopathically trained in cranial therapy. She works with both adults and babies. This hands-on work is very gentle. Within this treatment the therapist will look to feel the very small fluctuations of movement within the body called involuntary motion. To the practitioner, this feels like a gentle expansion and contraction of all the tissues, occurring 7 to 14 times a minute. This involuntary motion can be interrupted by any form of trauma, such as a difficult birth, a car accident, falls or general illness. Over time, the body may accumulate these ‘traumas’ and symptoms start to show.
Cranial Osteopathy is suitable for all ages and many conditions. As it is an extremely gentle treatment it is very suitable for newborn babies and the elderly.
